FS Southside 35, Greenwood 25
IFORT SMITH -- Fort Smith Southside rallied to claim a win in a game of defending state champions at Southside Stadium.
Southside (1-0) rallied from a 25-21 deficit behind the running of Damon Lawson and Daniel McGee and the passing of Clay Borengasser, who was 9-of-14 for 127 yards.
The Rebels were able to hold Greenwood senior quarterback Tyler Wilson somewhat in check.
Southside's Anthony Warren, who scored two touchdowns, punched in the go-ahead score with 4 minutes, 58 seconds in the game.
Greenwood took a 13-0 lead on two quick Wilson strikes. Wilson's 10-yard pass to Josh Hogan made it 7-0 with 7:51 left in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs added anothe score to go ahead 13-0 late in the first half.
Van Buren 16, Alma 14
VAN BUREN -- A poor snap on a punt with 22 seconds left led to a blocked punt and safety as Van Buren knocked off Crawford County rival Alma.
Alma led 14-0 on a pair of short touchdown runs before the Pointers (1-0) got on the board on a 39-yard pass from Alvin Medlin to Logan Meadors with 4 minutes, 48 seconds left in the first half.
The Pointers tied the score at 14-14 in the third quarter when Meadors hauled in his second scoring pass, this one a 20-yarder from Alan Davis.
The score remained tied until Miles Morrison raced in to block Alma's punt and the safety resulted in the final score.
Biagio Tumminello led Alma with 19 carries for 102 yards.
FS Northside 20, Pine Bluff 12
PINE BLUFF -- Fort Smith Northside's Semaj Edwards ran for 192 yards on 32 carries as the Grizzlies scored a season-opening win.
Northside led 7-0 at the half on Dax Dupire's 2-yard run with 5 minutes, 48 seconds left in the first quarter and took that score into halftime.
Edwards added scoring runs of 10 and 36 yards for Northside (1-0), the last coming with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter. Pine Bluff (0-1) added a late score.
Dupire, trying to fill the shoes of former Northside quarterback Kodi Burns, finished 8-of-12 for 91 yards.
